- Need of Healing Touch to Bleeding Wounds of Sikh Nation.
- Problems Sikhs are facing regarding their distinct identity.
Sir,
Sikh Nation Organization, wants to draw your urgent attention towards serious problems, Sikhs are facing on the issue of Sikh identity, not only in France, Germany and Denmark, but also in India, besides hurt fealings due to open and bleeding wounds of Sikh Nation i.e. Operation Blue Star and 84 Riots, which need immidiate remedial measures, required to be taken, collectively by the Parliament,at your level.
It will be appropriate to point out here, that Sikh Nation, which opted to remain part of India on achieving independence from British rule, has no other Forum except Indian Parliament, to take up such issues at national and international level.
Therefore, this is moral as well as constitutional responsibility of Indian Parliament, to address to such problems in view of, unmatched sacrifices made by Sikh Nation, while fighting Mughal tyrrani, during Freedom Struggle against British slavery, while defending countrys borders during Indo-China and Indo-Pak wars, and catagoric commitments on record, of Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Jawahar lal Nehru and Indian National Congress, to safeguard intrests of Sikh Nation in free India.
According to stastics, prepared by Maulana Azad, during Freedom Struggle against British rule, out of 4771 martyres, 3697 were Sikhs, thereby contributing more than three fourth of the sacrifices, with legendary patriots, like, Sardar Kartar Singh Sarabha, S Ajit Singh, S.Udham Singh Sunam, Shaheed Bhagat Singh,S. Sohan Singh Bhakna Kamagatamaru,Baba Ram Singh ji and Nanmdhari Kuka Singhs, when the Sikhs were only 2% of the population.
Moved by Sikh Nations sacrifices, Mahatma Gandhi said, the Sikh martyrs have shown the courage and resgination of the highest order. Pt.Nehru maintained,India was startled by the amazing desplay of tenacity and courage shown by the brave Sikhs, and folowing commitments were made to Sikh Nation;.
In 1929 during historic Congress Session on the banks of river Ravi at Lahore, presided by Mahatma Gandhi, a resolution was passed which read as,The Congress party confirms to the Sikhs that in free India there wont be any Constitution that will not be acceptable to Sikh Nation.
In 1946 on July 6, at Calcutta, briefing press on decisions taken in meeting of Congress Working Committee, Pt. Nehru said,Punjabs brave Sikh Nation is entitled to special consideration. I see nothing wrong in an area and a set up in the north, wherein the Sikhs can also experience the glow of freedom.
During partition more than 2 lakh Sikhs perished in blood shed, when over 25 lakhs had to migrate under horrible conditions. They happily faced all hardships but refused to part with India, due to deep love and patriotism for their mother land, yet they are asked to prove it every day, by self proclaimed custodians of Patriotism.
Regretfully, even after 57 years of independence, some of the most genuine religious and Sikh Identity issues, like Vatican city status for Amritsar, a transmitter at Harimandir sahib to relay Gurbani, Sikh personal law etc. still remain unresolved..
Every time, Sikh Nation has to struggle hard, to get even minor issues settled.. The most recent example is, Sikh organizations agitating for last many days, against continued harrassment of Sikh women, at the hands of Chandigarh Traffic Police, for forcing them to wear helmets, against Sikh tenets.
Two most traumatic and worst wounds, suffered by the Sikh Nation in Independent India, i.e. Army attack on Akal Takhat, the supreme temporal seat of Sikhs, and Nov.84 Riots, still remain open and bleeding even after twenty years.
Although permanent scars were inevitable, unfortunately, no effort was ever made to help these wounds heal. Parliament is yet to express regrets over Operation Blue Star and punishment to guilty of 84 riots is no where in sight. To add insult to injury the kingpins of riots are getting positions of power instead of punishment.
Through this letter, written on 6thJune, 20thAnneversary of Operation Blue Star, but submitted today on 6thJuly, 5thAnneversary of Martyrdom of Kargil War Heros of 8 Sikh Regiment, with a deep fealing of patriotism, which is in no way lesser than those Sikh soldiers, who sacrificed their lives for mother land India, it is brought to the notice of countrys highest contitutional body, the Parliament, that Sikh Nation has been exposed to deep pain, hurt and to some extent even a fealing of mistrust.
You will agree, that in National interest and in the interest of fairness and justice, the Sikh Nation deserves certainly a far better treatment, and at least, needs to be provided a well meaning healing touch, without further loss of time.
Therefore, in Natonal Interest, following genuine issues need to be addressed at the earliest through concensus, by all Members of both Houses of Parliament;
- Vatican city status for Amritsar, the city of and Harimandir sahib Akal Takhat, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs.
- Transmitter at Harimandir sahib, for continuous relay of Gurbani.
- Corridor to Guruduara Nanakiana sahib, the birth place of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.
- Sikh personal law..
- Resolution by Parliament condemning Army attack on Sri Harimandir Sahib and Akal Takhat during operation Blue Star.
- Punishment to the guilty of 84 riots.
- Resolution by Parliament condemning Human Right violations by French Govt.,to build international opinion and pressure on France, to withdraw Law imposing unreasonable curbs on Human Right of personal freedom of tender aged school going children, which violate various UN Conventions on; Human Rights, Elimination of Intolerance and Discrimination based on religion and Belief, and Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and Children. [High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations has acknowleged vide its letter G/SO 215/1 FRAN 2832 dated 30 April 2004, that a petition against Human Right violations by France, datd 17 March, submitted under1503 Procedure, by Sikh Nation Organization, has been examined and admitted. A copy of the same has been sent to Government of France for comments, and a summary of it submitted to the Working Group on Communications and the Commission on Human Rights for consideration.]
- To take up with UNO, France and other Nations, the issue of ban on head wear Dastar, religious symbols and dress in schools of France, disrespect to Turban and harrasment to Sikhs recently at Munich airport in Germany and for incidents of not allowing Sikhs to wear Kirpan at Copenhagen in Denmark.
- Amendment in road safety rules and where ever required, to provide exemption to Sikh women from wearing of helmets.
Hoping for a just and early action.
With deep regards.
Yours sincerely,
(Dr. Manjit Singh Randhawa)
